Lesson 6: Craft - Continuous Lines

Activity: For this lesson, we talked about Pablo Picasso and his continuous line and about earth day. Picasso was a famous artist whose drawings were made out of continuous lines. After Picasso, we talked about Earth day, which was the day were doing this lesson. Then we were able to create our own continuous drawing with Earth Day in mind. Hence, the drawing subject. First, we practiced with a lead pencil and then we would trace it with a thin sharpie. After we were finished tracing we would go and add bubble imprints in our artwork. The way we would do it was blow into a mixture of dish soup and food coloring and then we would place out artwork on top of the bubbles creating the bubble imprint. We would do that multiple time so the bubble show on the drawing.

Extension Activity: An extension activity could be to create a drawing without the continuous line concept. This could be a little more detail and look more like something that is not messy with trying to avoid lifting the pencil. Then we would use the bubble adding concept to paint the drawing they created.

 Lesson 5: Clay

Activity: In this lesson, we learned about different type of clay term that people use who are masters in the clay industry. After learning the terms, we were then able to create our own clay model. I though this clay would be hard to work with, but it was nice and soft. We were supposed to have a positive and a negative element on the project. Positive would be something we add and negative would be something we take away from the clay. In my project on top, you can see the eyes, nose, and mouth are positive, and the stars are negative. then we put our initials on the back and put it into a bowl, creating the round edges. I choose for this project of a smiley face because it is something that everyone should do, and I had to create something fast because of the little time we had. Wow, me complaining about time again.

Extension Activity: An extension activity would be for high grades, to create a bowl with a spinning table that you can actually eat out of. We could invite a person to show the students how to create a bowl. It would get a little messy, but it would also learn them to clean up after themselves. This would also help the student work their motor skills.

Lesson 4: Printmaking - Roller Stamp

Activity: For this lesson, the teacher choose to do printmaking on a foam sheet of paper, to use to role the paint on, and then stamp in on another piece of paper. First, we would draw our picture on a sheet of paper as big as the foam. Then we would put the foam sheet under the drawing and trace the drawing to transfer it the foam. After we are finished we would take it to the paint and roller. We would apply paint to the foam and then we would press it down on the piece of paper we choose to stamp it on, creating our stamp. We repeated that a couple times. We were then instructed to put it on a piece of paper and write what our print meant to use. I added finger prints to make it interesting and different from the rest of the stamps. The picture is our grain setup on the farm.

Extension Activity: An extension activity would be for 5th graders, instead of using the foam, we would be using a laminate and wood carving to create a stamp with special tools to create more detail. The tool is a sharp tool that you use with different attachments to carve out the picture you desire. First you draw with a pencil and then with a thin sharpie. After you finish you start carving with the special tool. This project would be something about their culture or object they value after a history class about different cultures.

 Lesson 3: Paper - Weaving

Activity: I had the opportunity to teach this lesson to the students. I decided to do paper weaving with my teaching partner. We choose this project because we could incorporate a little culture with it and show the student about my culture weaving rugs. After talking about cultures the students were able to create a rug with paper. The choose two color of one inch strips and a color to weave the strips in. Marking the side 1 and 2, and the strips A and B, helped the students weave the rug and eliminate confusing while weaving their rug. Then they glued it together to keep it in place. Lastly they would cut the end multiple times to create the frizzle to simulate what rug would look like. The picture are two of the rugs I created to show the students want we wanted them to do.

Extension Activity: A extension activity would be to add pictures to the rug of their hobbies, likes, and items that have value to themselves. This would simulate what the Native Americans did in the past to create a story or who they are, also a history lesson. The 3rd grade student would have a rug that symbolizes who they are by presenting it on their rug they created.

 Lesson 2: Painting - Sunset

Activity: For this activity, the teachers choose to talk about the painter Ted Harrison, Harrison used bold lines and also contrasted his lines to create the illusion to what the sunset would look like. This is what we did for this lesson, create the same sunset Harrison used to make. First of all, the reason this artwork didn't turn out for me was there was no paint that had the original color or color pallets at all to remotely try to create a sunset. I suggest to have the paint containers cleaned to the original color or none missing. I created a river in the middle of my hills to create a little more character. Then I painted my sky with light orange and yellow to simulate a sunset and darker colors for my hills, because as I was using my green color they were mixed so much in my dark colors, it landed up having dark colors. Otherwise, this project we pretty good.

Extension Activity: A extension activity for this project would be to create at a farther angle, and add the students hometown as a silhouette, they will still be creating the landscape and everything, they would just be creating something personal to them. Then they could take it home and show their parents their hometown. This lesson would fit for 4th grade students, since its so much work.

 Lesson 1: Drawing - Illusion

Activity: This was one of the first lessons we did from other student, that was about drawing. The teachers for this lesson decided to draw an illusion. First, they instructed us to write our initials on a piece of paper. Secondly, we were instructed to draw a curvy line around our initials to have a point on where the illusion was gong to go. Thirdly, we drew lines from our initial border out to the edge of the paper. Fourthly, we created lines that arced from on line to the next. Then the opposite way on the other line, took turns arcing from line to line. Finally, we used three different colors to take turns coloring, and never have the color repeat right after itself. I choose to make boxes where I had my initials, just to add a little creativity to the picture. We then wrote down what mediums we used as you can see on top. After we were finished coloring you could see the illusion presenting.

Extension Activity: An extension assignment would be, to ask the 4th grades to create an illusion using a different pattern on what we used in this project. I would be interesting to see what student would come up with. The internet could help them fine ideas on what they can do, but they would not be allowed to copy the whole artwork that they found.

Hidden Safari Project

Activity: For this activity we were able to create a hidden image such as a animal from different habitats. We used warm colors to hid the picture. I choose to hid a tiger behind my circles and squiggly lines. I might have applied too much color because at some point it was hard to find my tiger, but you can still see it. We also made special safari glasses that you can see in red to see the hidden picture in out safari. When we were drawing out picture that we wanted to hide, we were instructed to draw it upside down to trick the brain, but we were also not supposed to press down on our pencils too much because we wouldn't have been able to hide the animal. Finally, we added three clues what our animal was. I should have used a sharpie so we can see the clues. The clues are, lives in the jungle, is a carnivore, and has strips. Dead give away, right?

Extension Activity: For a extension assignment, I would create a lesson about behavioral toward other students, a lesson how to threat you classmates. Then I would have students write hidden messages for their classmates, It wouldn't matter to which classmates. A general message that is not personalized to anyone. This would help all my 3rd graders get a message from their fellow classmates.

VINCENT VAN GOGH PROJECT

Activity:  In this class we learned about the artist Vincent Van Gogh from the time era 1953, Vincent thought himself how to draw, and received no formal knowledge. He only sold two of his artwork in his life time and today his paintings cost millions. Vincent would usually color in dark and sad colors maybe because of candle light and oil lamps that he used to paint under. Vincent Von Gough passed away at age 37 years old. In this activity we took different color tissue paper and created a colored sky by ripping strips and gluing them to piece of paper. I choose a sky that simulates a sunset. I used colors that you might see at a sunset. After adding all my colors I added glue on top to keep the tissue paper in place. Looking back I would have liked to have more time to cover more black spots, but time did not allow it. Then I added a black outline of a grain handling setup. Creating my Vincent Von Goth art project.

Extension Activity: For an extension project we could use the make a self-portrait with the same concept. First, we would take a projector and trace the heads of the students, and then have them cut it out. Then, we would add tissue paper for the background the way the students desire. This could be but on a bulletin board and student could look at each other and guess who the other person is. This would be the third grade level, because we would be using scissors because they can be dangerous for children.

The Elements of Art and the Principle of Design

Element of Art: Space

Location: Up on the hills overlooking the park at Whitewater Park, Minnesota.
Definition: the emptiness between objects.

Element of Art: Color

Definition: is a element of art that is produced when light hits an object, and is reflected to the eye.
Location: My sister collects rocks and paint them.

Principle of Art: Emphasis

Definition: What the picture focuses on the most.
Location: Little egg layer hens (4 weeks old) at the all barn.

Principle of Art: Balance

Definition: Distribution of the visual weight, it can be symmetric or asymmetrical.
Location: On the top of the bank of the pig lagoon south of the community.

Principle of Art: Unity

Definition: the part of the picture that stand out the most, like example the snow.
Location: Outside of my house facing south to the baseball field.

Activity: For this activity we were supposed to take picture of the different elements of art and the principle of art. I went into my pictures for the past and looked for the picture that best fit the description of the elements and the principles of art. This was to show what we would be looking for in pictures, when creating or looking at artwork, like color, contrast, balance, unity, etc. I have to say I enjoyed this project because I have always loved to take picture of scenery and they usually turn out, but I never took into consideration what I could be looking for in a picture when I am snapping pictures in the fields. It also, helped me find out what the different elements and principles are. Hopefully this can improve my picture capturing skills.
Extension Activity: After teaching and showing my slide show to the student to teach them about the different elements and principles or art, I could put the students into groups and have them create their own PowerPoint. This could be more effective for the 4th grades to do the project on their own. They would also have the option of adding artwork they created.

"The Dot" Activity

Activity: In class we listened to the book "The Dot" and it was a good book to start out the art lesson. It is a way to get students engaged in the art project to generate their own ideas. After reading the book we were instructed to make our own "dot" project using coffee filters. The instructor told us that if we write something on the filter with a crayon it will show after painting over it. I used different medias like oil pastel, crayons, color pencils and water color to create this master piece. I choose to go two different filter, just in case one did not turn out. What I learned in this project is not to take two different project, because I was in so much of a hurry that both of them didn't turn out as planned, the paint bleed into places it wasn't supposed to. So, I will instruct my students to stick with just one. As you can see on the left I wrote my name in a white crayon so it shows after painting to over with read. I do not think I was going with some warm color or cool colors, I was just painting how I felt I wanted it to be. One does seem like a color wheel, but anyways lesson learned choose one if you only have 20 minutes to do it.

Extension Activity: I would first read the story "The Dot" to the students. After reading the book we would discuss how we can use this story to create our own dotted project and we would use the coffee filter to do the same project and tell then what they can use to create their artwork like different medias, like color pencils, crayons, paint, or oil pastels. After that activity we could approach from a different angle, by creating a dotted project with their fingers. We would be using paint to create any picture they desire, using different colors then different media's. Simply using certain finger to dip and dot. Of course, it will be a little messy but you'd want your second graders to have fun.
