"The Dot" Activity

Activity: In class we listened to the book "The Dot" and it was a good book to start out the art lesson. It is a way to get students engaged in the art project to generate their own ideas. After reading the book we were instructed to make our own "dot" project using coffee filters. The instructor told us that if we write something on the filter with a crayon it will show after painting over it. I used different medias like oil pastel, crayons, color pencils and water color to create this master piece. I choose to go two different filter, just in case one did not turn out. What I learned in this project is not to take two different project, because I was in so much of a hurry that both of them didn't turn out as planned, the paint bleed into places it wasn't supposed to. So, I will instruct my students to stick with just one. As you can see on the left I wrote my name in a white crayon so it shows after painting to over with read. I do not think I was going with some warm color or cool colors, I was just painting how I felt I wanted it to be. One does seem like a color wheel, but anyways lesson learned choose one if you only have 20 minutes to do it.

Extension Activity: I would first read the story "The Dot" to the students. After reading the book we would discuss how we can use this story to create our own dotted project and we would use the coffee filter to do the same project and tell then what they can use to create their artwork like different medias, like color pencils, crayons, paint, or oil pastels. After that activity we could approach from a different angle, by creating a dotted project with their fingers. We would be using paint to create any picture they desire, using different colors then different media's. Simply using certain finger to dip and dot. Of course, it will be a little messy but you'd want your second graders to have fun.
